People lost at sea were found by personal locator beacons.
The Department of Commerce recently reported that search and rescue satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) located 350 stranded people in 2023.
The NOAA launched their Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system in 1982, which connects to Personal Locator Beacons carried by people around the world. By responding to distress signals transmitted by the beacons, the NOAA estimates that the system has supported 48,000 global rescue missions in the last 40 years.
“With each life saved, the SARSAT program proves its worth,” said NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service Assistant Administrator Steve Volz. “NOAA’s partnerships with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, NASA, and others around the world are the foundation of SARSAT’s long success.”
